Belonging

Belonging is the feeling of being accepted and able to participate as a valued member of a group. At work, it is influenced by everyday relationships and access to opportunities.

Example

An employee feels able to contribute in meetings and sees their work recognised without having to conceal relevant aspects of their identity.

What to keep in mind

Belonging should not require conformity to a narrow social style. Ask employees about actual experiences and address exclusion rather than treating attendance at social events as evidence that everyone feels included.
