Reference Check

A reference check seeks relevant information from people able to comment on a candidate's work history or performance. It helps verify evidence gathered during recruitment.

Example

With the appropriate permission and process, a recruiter contacts a former manager to confirm the candidate's responsibilities and asks consistent role-related questions.

What to keep in mind

References can be incomplete or influenced by opinion. Consider the source and context, protect personal information and give a candidate an appropriate chance to address material discrepancies.
