Salary to Hourly Conversion Formula

Total Annual Working Days = (Days per Week × Weeks per Year) − Unpaid Leave Days
Total Annual Working Hours = Total Annual Working Days × Hours per Day
Hourly Rate (Wage) = Annual Salary ÷ Total Annual Working Hours
Daily Rate = Hourly Rate × Hours per Day
Weekly Rate = Daily Rate × Days per Week
Bi-Weekly Pay = Weekly Rate × 2
Semi-Monthly Pay = Annual Salary ÷ 24
Monthly Salary = Annual Salary ÷ 12
Overtime Pay Rate = Hourly Rate × OT Multiplier (e.g. 1.5×)
Example: $60,000/year ÷ (8 hrs × 5 days × 52 weeks = 2,080 hrs) = $28.85/hour
Overtime Pay Example: $28.85 × 1.5 = $43.27/hr OT rate × 5 OT hrs/week = $216.35/week OT pay

Frequently Asked Questions - Salary to Hourly Calculator

How do I convert my annual salary to hourly?
Use our free salary to hourly calculator above - just enter your salary, pay frequency, and work schedule. Manually, the formula is: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ Total Annual Working Hours. Total hours = (hours/day × days/week × weeks/year) − unpaid leave hours. Example: $60,000 annual ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.85/hour. The tool handles all 7 pay frequencies automatically.
What is the salary to hourly conversion formula?
The core salary to hourly formula is: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours per Day × Days per Week × Weeks per Year − Unpaid Leave Hours). From the hourly rate, all other pay periods follow: Daily = Hourly × Hours/Day; Weekly = Daily × Days/Week; Monthly = Annual ÷ 12; Bi-Weekly = Weekly × 2.
How many working hours are in a year?
Standard working hours per year vary by country and schedule: US full-time (40 hrs/week × 52 weeks): 2,080 hours. UK standard (37.5 hrs/week): 1,950 hours. India factories (48 hrs/week per Factories Act): 2,496 hours. Part-time 20 hrs/week: 1,040 hours. Subtracting 10 unpaid leave days at 8 hrs: 2,000 hours. Our hourly rate calculator lets you input your exact schedule for a precise result.
Does this tool include an overtime pay calculator?
Yes - it has a built-in overtime pay calculator. Enable the Overtime toggle to set your OT multiplier (1.5× standard time-and-a-half, 2× double time, or a custom rate) and weekly OT hours. The results show your overtime hourly rate, weekly OT earnings, and total annual pay including overtime - useful for payroll budgeting and offer evaluation.
Can I use it as an hourly to annual salary calculator?
Yes - the tool is fully bi-directional. Select Hourly as the pay frequency, enter your hourly wage, and set your schedule. It instantly shows your equivalent monthly, annual, weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly salary. This is useful for freelancers and contractors who want to benchmark their hourly rate against salaried positions.
Does it work for part-time and irregular schedules?
Yes. Set hours/day and days/week to any custom value (e.g., 4 hrs/day × 3 days = 12 hrs/week). The wage calculator adjusts all conversions accordingly. You can also enter unpaid leave days to get an accurate effective hourly rate that accounts for days not worked. This makes it ideal for freelancers, gig workers, and part-time employees.
How do I use this for salary benchmarking?
For salary benchmarking, convert all roles to a common hourly rate. Enter each position's annual CTC or monthly salary, set the standard work schedule, and compare the resulting hourly wages. HR teams often use this approach to benchmark pay across departments where some roles are hourly and others are salaried. Combine with our salary increment calculator to model hike impacts.
Which currencies are supported?
8 built-in currencies: USD, GBP, INR, EUR, CAD, AUD, AED, and SGD - each with correct locale formatting (e.g., Indian numbering for INR, comma-separated for USD). A "Custom" option lets you enter any symbol. This makes it a useful HR tool for small businesses across geographies. Note: no live exchange rates - amounts are displayed in the selected currency only.
Is my salary data safe?
100% private. All calculations run entirely in your browser - no data is sent to any server. The optional Save Preset stores inputs in your browser's localStorage only. SmallHRTools is one of the best free HR tools precisely because it is privacy-first: no account creation, no cookies, no tracking of salary inputs.
