KPIs

Key performance indicators, or KPIs, are selected measures used to monitor performance against important objectives. They are a subset of metrics chosen because they inform a decision or priority.

Example

A recruitment team tracks time to fill and new-hire retention as KPIs because both relate to its aim of filling roles promptly with suitable people.

What to keep in mind

A metric becomes useful through its definition and context, not by being labelled key. Review competing effects so that improving one indicator does not damage quality, fairness or another important outcome.
