Performance Appraisal

A performance appraisal is a formal review of an employee's work over a defined period. It usually considers outcomes, behaviours, development needs and agreed expectations.

Example

At a year-end review, a manager and employee examine completed goals, discuss examples of effective work and agree development priorities for the next period.

What to keep in mind

An appraisal should not be the first time an employee hears about a significant concern. Use evidence from the whole period rather than relying mainly on recent events or general impressions.
