Performance Improvement Plan

A performance improvement plan, or PIP, sets out specific performance concerns, required improvements, support and review arrangements. It provides a structured opportunity to address identified gaps.

Example

A plan asks an employee to meet an agreed accuracy standard, provides coaching and schedules weekly reviews over a stated period.

What to keep in mind

Targets should be realistic, measurable and within the employee's control. A PIP should follow applicable procedures and should not disguise a predetermined dismissal decision or a need for reasonable accommodation.
