Psychological Safety

Psychological safety is a shared belief that people can raise questions, concerns or mistakes without being humiliated or punished for speaking up. It supports learning and honest discussion within a team.

Example

During a project review, a junior employee challenges an assumption and the manager explores the concern rather than mocking the employee for questioning a senior colleague.

What to keep in mind

Psychological safety does not mean avoiding accountability or disagreement. Teams still need clear standards, respectful challenge and proportionate responses to misconduct or repeated failure to follow agreed requirements.
