Termination Letter

A termination letter formally communicates that an employment relationship is ending and records relevant details. It may include the effective date, reason, notice and next steps, depending on the circumstances and law.

Example

After completing the required process, an employer issues a letter confirming the termination date and arrangements for final pay and returning equipment.

What to keep in mind

The letter does not make an otherwise unlawful process valid. Ensure the content matches the facts, contract and applicable requirements, and distinguish dismissal from resignation, redundancy or expiry of a fixed term.
