Career Development

Career development is the process of building experience, capabilities and choices that support a person's working life. It can involve learning, feedback, new assignments and decisions about direction.

Example

An employee interested in operations management seeks mentoring, takes responsibility for a small process improvement and reviews the experience with their manager.

What to keep in mind

Development does not always mean promotion. Agree actions that fit the person's interests and circumstances, and distinguish support the employer can provide from outcomes it cannot promise.
