Cross Skilling

Cross-skilling develops skills used in another function or task area so employees can work across boundaries or provide backup. It can improve flexibility without requiring a permanent role change.

Example

Two payroll team members learn each other's reconciliation tasks so either can cover essential work during planned leave or an unexpected absence.

What to keep in mind

Set proficiency and authorisation requirements before treating someone as cover. Cross-skilling should not quietly add a second full workload or bypass controls requiring separation of duties.
