Job Abandonment

Job abandonment is a term used when an employer concludes that an employee has stopped attending and intends not to return without following the exit process. The required evidence and procedure vary.

Example

After repeated unexplained absence, an employer makes reasonable contact attempts, checks available information and follows the applicable process before deciding how to classify the situation.

What to keep in mind

Absence alone does not necessarily prove an intention to resign. Emergencies, illness and communication failures need consideration, and final-pay or termination obligations remain subject to the relevant law.
