Progressive Counseling

Progressive counseling is a structured sequence of discussions and support intended to address workplace concerns before or alongside more formal action. Employers use the term differently in their policies.

Example

A manager discusses a recurring issue, agrees specific improvements and support, then reviews progress before deciding whether further steps are needed.

What to keep in mind

Clarify whether the discussion is informal coaching or part of a disciplinary procedure. Document expectations fairly and do not use softer terminology to conceal consequences the employee needs to understand.
