Show Cause Notice

A show cause notice asks a person to explain specified alleged conduct or circumstances before an employer considers further action. It should clearly state the concern and allow an appropriate response.

Example

An employer describes an alleged attendance-record discrepancy, provides relevant details and gives the employee a reasonable opportunity to explain.

What to keep in mind

The notice should not present a disputed allegation as already proven. Follow the governing procedure and applicable law, and consider the employee's response before deciding whether further investigation or action is warranted.
