Nine Box Grid

A nine-box grid groups employees using two three-level dimensions, commonly current performance and future potential. It is used to structure talent discussions and development decisions.

Example

Managers place employees provisionally on the grid, discuss supporting evidence and consider different development actions for strong performers and people needing support.

What to keep in mind

The grid simplifies complex information and can reinforce bias if ratings are vague. It should guide discussion rather than permanently label people or independently determine promotion and dismissal decisions.
